Beat the Heat: Indoor Summer Activities in Grain Valley, MO
Hey neighbors! Summer is officially here, and we have been blessed with some absolutely beautiful days so far. But let’s be honest, this is Missouri. Before we know it, we are going to wake up to a day where it is either pouring down rain or so incredibly hot and sticky that stepping onto the front porch feels like walking into a warm soup.
When the weather turns sour or the heat index hits triple digits, it is easy for the kids to get a little stir-crazy sitting on the couch.
But don't worry! You don't have to pack up the car and drive all the way across the city to find something fun to do. We have some fantastic indoor gems right here in Grain Valley to help your family cool off and dry off. Here are three of my favorite local spots to beat the heat or escape a rainy day this summer.
1. Catch a $3 Morning Movie at B&B Grain Valley Marketplace 8
When the humidity outside is unbearable, nothing feels quite as good as the blast of cold air conditioning inside a movie theater.
Our local B&B Grain Valley Marketplace 8 has an awesome tradition that is perfect for summer budget planning. Their Summer Kids Series is officially running! During the summer months, they offer special, affordable morning showtimes of favorite family movies. Tickets are just $3.00 for children and adults, or even cheaper at $2.00 if you sign up for their free Backstage Pass member program.
It is the perfect rainy day escape. You get to sink into those big, comfortable seats, share a bucket of popcorn, and enjoy a great movie without breaking the bank.
2. Cool Down with Free Activities at the Library
We mentioned the Mid-Continent Public Library Summer Reading Challenge in our last calendar update, but our local Grain Valley branch is truly a lifesaver on a super-hot afternoon.
Beyond checking out a stack of new books to read at home, the library is entirely free and has plenty of cozy tables, puzzles, and computers for the kids to use. They also host special indoor events all through June and July. From their interactive Lego building days to fun craft afternoons, it is a wonderful place to let your kids play and learn while staying completely out of the sun. Plus, picking out a few books counts toward their summer reading prizes, which is a total win-win for parents!
3. Shoot Some Hoops at the Grain Valley Community Center
If your kids have a ton of energy but it is simply too hot to run around the playground at Armstrong Park, head over to the Grain Valley Community Center at 713 Main Street!
Did you know our Community Center has an awesome indoor gym? Residents and non-residents are always welcome to stop in. They have open gym hours where kids can shoot hoops, play a game of indoor catch, or just run around on a safe, air-conditioned floor.
The fitness center and indoor facilities have great summer hours, staying open from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and until 6:00 p.m. on Fridays. It is a fantastic local resource that lets our kids stay active even when the weather isn't cooperating.
A Little Real Estate Note From Your Neighbor
Before you head out to find some shade or a nice cold drink, I wanted to share a quick thought as your neighborhood real estate friend.
When people think about buying a house in a new town, they often look at the backyard or the local parks. But as a local agent, I always tell buyers to look at the community spaces, too. Having a top-tier movie theater, a thriving library branch, and an active Community Center right inside our city limits is a huge selling point. It proves that Grain Valley is a town that cares about providing safe, year-round spaces for families. That great reputation is exactly what keeps our neighborhood highly desirable and our property values secure!
Stay Cool out There!
The next time the clouds roll in or the weather app shows a big red heat warning, don't sweat it. Grab the family, check out one of these local indoor spots, and enjoy some cool summer fun right down the street.
If you see me hiding out from the heat at the movie theater or the library this month, make sure to wave and say hello! And as always, if you ever want a quick update on what is happening with home trends in our neighborhood, or just need a recommendation for a great local AC technician to keep your home cool, my door is always open.
