Grain Valley City-Wide Clean Up: Time to Clear Out the Clutter

Hey neighbors! If you have been doing some spring cleaning around the house lately, your garage might be looking a little tight. Maybe you have an old mattress tucked in the corner, a broken lawn mower taking up space, or a dusty old TV you've been meaning to throw away for months.

Getting rid of big, heavy junk can be a real headache. Most trash companies charge a fortune to haul away large items, and nobody wants to pay extra just to clean out their own basement.

But that is the best part about living in Grain Valley! On Saturday, May 30, 2026, our city is hosting its annual City-Wide Clean Up Event. From 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., we can drop off all our unwanted household stuff for free at the Public Works Facility on James Rollo Drive.

Whether you just want to finally park your car in the garage again or get your yard looking sharp for summer BBQs, this free weekend is the perfect excuse to get it done. Here is everything you need to know to get ready!

The "Yes" List: What We Can Throw Away

The city will have giant dumpsters set up at the Public Works Facility, and the awesome staff will even help you unload your vehicle. It's a total team effort! Here is a list of the items you can load up and bring over this Saturday:

  • Old Furniture: Desks, chairs, couches, and tables that have seen better days.

  • Mattresses: Finally get rid of that old guest bed or worn-out mattress!

  • Electronics: Old TVs, broken computers, monitors, and tangled cords.

  • Metal Items: Scrap metal, old pipes, and broken metal patio furniture.

  • Lawn Mowers: You can bring old mowers, but we have to drain all the gas and oil out first!

  • Home Décor: Mirrors, old frames, and holiday decorations you don’t want anymore.

Quick Neighborly Tip: If you have a lot of small, loose items, they must be bagged up in trash bags, or the city workers won’t be able to take them.

The "No" List: What to Leave at Home

To keep the workers safe and follow local laws, there are a few things the city can't accept. Do not bring these items to the dumpsters:

  • Tires

  • Paint and Oil

  • Refrigerators or Air Conditioners (Anything with cooling chemicals)

  • Household Chemicals and Cleaners

  • Yard Waste (No tree branches, logs, or grass clippings)

A Helping Hand for Our Senior Neighbors!

Do you have an older neighbor on your street, or a grandparent living in town? The city is doing something wonderful for them. Tomorrow, Thursday, May 28th, and Friday, May 29th, the Public Works crew is doing free curbside pickupfor seniors on the city utility plan who signed up ahead of time. Keep an eye out for those big city trucks in the neighborhood helping our older friends clear out their yards!

3 Steps to a Easy-Breezy Clean Up Weekend

If you want to tackle the clutter this weekend without any stress, follow this quick game plan:

  1. Do a 20-Minute Sweep: Walk through your backyard, porch, and garage tonight. Grab anything that is broken, rusty, or just taking up space, and make a "dump pile."

  2. Grab Your Proof: This event is completely free, but it is only for people who live inside our Grain Valley city limits. Make sure to toss your driver's license or a recent city water bill into your car to prove you live here.

  3. Go Early: The event runs until 2:00 p.m., but the line on James Rollo Drive can get pretty long by lunchtime. Pack your car or truck on Friday night so you can beat the crowd Saturday morning and get back to enjoying your weekend!

A Little Real Estate

Aside from just having a beautifully organized garage and a clean yard to enjoy this summer, clearing out this clutter does wonders for your home's "curb appeal." As your neighborhood real estate friend, I see firsthand how a tidy exterior makes our entire community look more welcoming, and it keeps all of our property values strong and healthy!

If you ever have questions about what's happening in our local neighborhood housing market, or if you just want a recommendation for a great local contractor to help fix up your newly cleaned-up space, feel free to reach out anytime. Have fun cleaning up this weekend!
